Diary of Margery Blake by Paula Roscoe

Diary of Margery Blake by Paula Roscoe

June 8, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

Reaching womanhood is a terrifying prospect for the young, strong-minded Margery Blake when her father arranges her marriage to a man she barely knows. Realising she is nothing more than a pawn in her family’s politics, Margery has no power, no voice, and no rights to fight the inevitable; however, what transpires is worse than anything Margery could ever have imagined. Alone and vulnerable, Margery writes the details of her turbulent marriage in a secret diary. The harshness of 19th century life for women, seen through the eyes of a young bride. Buy here on Amazon

Any Requests for Blog ideas?

June 7, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

What Do YOU think? Hello readers, and thank you for being here. I have decided to turn today’s blog into what hopefully could be a communication exercise. Each day I write your blog, with no real idea about which you like, or even hate! Do you enjoy my blogs in general, and find them interesting, or would you prefer different topics? If possible, let me know which you enjoy, which not so much. Do you enjoy the factual ones, humour, astrology, origins of days we celebrate often without knowing why? Useful sites and tips for writers? Or even if there…

‘Nails’ by Matt Nuth

‘Nails’ by Matt Nuth

June 6, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

A story too disturbing to be true, too possible to be ignored, and it should frighten each of us. Nails is a powerful exploration of society’s willingness to sacrifice freedom through the eyes and actions of three deeply flawed people who are thrown together into a riveting, dark and twisted world in which each of them is used and discarded by those in authority. Tau is a man who would slit his own mother’s throat if the opportunity arose. He is recruited to help change a future election, and, in the process, move Democracy closer and closer to autocracy. Simon…

The Pendle Witches

May 24, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

Perhaps the most notorious witch trial of the 17th century, that of the Pendle witches, is one of the tales of imprisonment and execution at Lancaster Castle. Twelve people were accused of witchcraft; one died while held in custody, eleven went to trial. One was tried and found guilty at York and the other ten were tried at Lancaster. Only one was found not guilty. It was an unusual trial in that it was documented by the clerk of the court therefore has remained available to be read. Also, just over three centuries saw witch trials held in England but…

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

May 17, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,Jack jump over the candle-stick. The rhyme is first recorded in a manuscript of around 1815 and was collected by James Orchard Halliwell in the mid-nineteenth century. Jumping candlesticks was a form of fortune telling and a sport. It’s has been said, that the kids poem was created to explain the practice of candle jumping, which was famous way back in the 1600’s. Generally practiced at festivals in England, young girls would leap over a lit candle, trying not to extinguish its flame. Good luck was said to be signalled by clearing a candle without…

May Day Traditions

May Day Traditions

May 3, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

The first day of May is known as May Day, a time of year when warmer weather brings newly grown flowers and blossoms to the trees. A lovely month of the year, it is the time when people’s thoughts move from winter to the coming summer. Even though summer only officially begins in June, May opens the door; and May Day has had a rich history in England for over 2,000 years. Floralia The Romans celebrated the cycle of life at the festival of Floralia from the end of April until the early days of May. Flora was the Goddess…

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

April 26, 2023 Lynne Northing Comments 0 Comment

Of all the dark meaning of children’s nursery rhymes, one of the worst must be  ‘ Mary Mary quite contrary.’ This rhyme is usually said to be about Bloody Mary, daughter of King Henry VIII and concerns the torture and murder of Protestants. Queen Mary was a staunch Catholic and her “garden” here is an allusion to the graveyards which were filling with Protestant martyrs. The ‘silver bells’ were a type of thumbscrew and the ‘cockle shells’ were also instruments of torture, used on Protestant martyrs to ‘persuade’ them to change faith. The ‘maiden’ was an instrument used to behead people…

Druid’s Magic Symbols The Druids were the Celtic tribes’ soothsayers, healers and warriors. The leaders of the tribes would consult with their Druid for everything, from choosing the right time to plant crops, to going into battle. Druids thrived in Britain before the invasion of the Romans in the first and second AD. Druids believe that there is power within nature, that the gods dwell within the landscape and that they speak to you through symbols and signs that work on your inner instincts. (Something modern men have long forgotten to use!) Druids lived and breathed nature. They lived among…

Easter Lore

Easter Lore

April 7, 2023 Lynne Northing

Easter is called a moveable feast because the date changes every year. Easter Sunday can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April. The reason for this variation in the date of Easter is based on the lunar calendar (moon) rather than our more well-known solar one. Easter always falls on the first Sunday following the full Moon after the 21st March. In 2023 Good Friday is on 7th April and Easter Monday on 10th April.             Symbolism has always played an important part in festivals and celebrations, and Easter is no exception to this rule. Before Christianity…

April Fools Day

April Fools Day

April 1, 2023 Lynne Northing

April Fools’ Day is an annual custom on 1 April consisting of practical jokes and hoaxes. Jokesters often expose their actions by shouting “April Fools!” at the recipient. Even mass media can be involved in these pranks, which may be revealed as such the following day. The custom of setting aside a day for playing harmless pranks upon one’s friends, family and neighbour has been relatively common in the world historically. Enjoy yours!

Where and Why did we ever start using Piggy Banks?

Where and Why did we ever start using Piggy Banks?

March 22, 2023 Lynne Northing

The invention of the piggy bank originated over 600 years ago in the 15th century when people would use pots to store what money they had. At that time, metal was an expensive commodity and not frequently used for household equipment. Household items such as plates and pots were made from an  affordable clay called ‘pygg’. During The Middle Ages, whenever folks could save an extra coin or two, they dropped it into one of their clay jars forged from the orange-coloured clay material. These money containers were not as a matter of course made in the shape of pigs, but…

Mother’s Day in the UK

Mother’s Day in the UK

March 19, 2023 Lynne Northing

In the UK Mother’s Day is celebrated in March. This year, Mother’s Day 2023 in the UK will be celebrated on the 19th March. As with most of our celebrations, Mother’s Day can be traced back to Greek and Roman times. The Greeks used their annual spring festival to honour Rhea, the wife of Cronus and the mother of many heroes of Greek myth. The Roman Spring festival of Hilaria was held to celebrate Cybele, a mother goddess. Offerings, games and parades began on the Ides of March and lasted for three days. Those Romans knew how to celebrate… In…

St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2023 Lynne Northing

St. Patrick’s Day is officially observed on March 17 each year, which is believed to have been the date St Patrick died in the 5th Century. Strange as it may seem, the man who would become St. Patrick was born in Britain (part of the Roman Empire at the time) as Maewyn Succat in the late 4th century. His family were Christians, but it’s said that Maewyn himself was an atheist until he reached 16 years of age. His life changed at that point when he was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland. After 6 years in captivity herding…

Spring/Vernal Equinox

Spring/Vernal Equinox

March 15, 2023 Lynne Northing

All around the world, different cultures express their gratitude and welcome Spring with celebrations and rituals honouring a new beginning. The Spring Equinox is an annual astronomical event to witness the balance that comes with an equal day and night. The word “equinox” derives its name from the Latin term “eqi” which means “equal” and “nox” which means “night”. According to the astronomical calendar, there are two equinoxes each year in March and September, when the day and night are approximately 12 hours each everywhere on Earth. Many cultures around the world celebrate the whole day as the March equinox….

Owls in History and Magic

March 1, 2023 Lynne Northing

Owls have been associated with magic for a very long time, but do we know why? They seem to be second only to cats in their mystic ways and as witches’ familiars. Barn owls are especially considered to be magical creatures associated with witchcraft. They are also said to have some connection with death and rebirth, which is why they can be seen as omens of change.  The owl’s association with wisdom was first established in Roman times, for they are the emblem of Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom. In Greek Myth owls were similarly associated with Athena, the Goddess of…

The History of Valentine’s Day

The History of Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2023 Lynne Northing

St Valentine’s Day has its origins in a number of different legends that have been passed down to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of Valentine’s Day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, represented by a young boy with a bow and arrow. One of the first mentions of ‘Valentine’ was in Ancient Roman times when everyone was expected to worship the many Roman Gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, was thrown into prison because of his beliefs. On February 14th he was put to death, not only for his Christianity, but because he was said…

The very thought conjures images of hideous, brooding creatures perched high above cities and villages The most terrifying ones look as though they might break free from the stone and attack. When gargoyles began appearing on churches throughout Europe in the 13th century, they served as decorative water spouts, crafted to preserve stone walls by diverting the flow of rainwater outward from rooftops. Maybe some of you have already moved everything away hoping for a better Christmas next year, but for those of you still surrounded by the trimmings, when should they officially come down? We might have all had enough bad luck in 2022 to risk any more for breaching superstitions. Each year we are faced with much debate about the correct day. New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve

December 31, 2022 Lynne Northing

Customs in celebration of the New Year take place the world over. Strangely enough in Europe, the New Year was celebrated in the past at different times varying from Christmas to March, and the official celebration on 1st January is comparatively new in the scheme of things. Until the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, the official New Year in Britain began in March! As far as the common people were concerned however, it has always been celebrated on 1st January.             Many of the customs associated with this turning point combine the elements of death and rebirth. The…

The Origins of Boxing Day

The Origins of Boxing Day

December 26, 2022 Lynne Northing

There are several theories as to the origin of Boxing Day, but in general the tradition has long included the wealthy giving money and other gifts to the poor. The European tradition dates to the Middle Ages, but some claim it dates back even farther to the late Roman/early Christian era when metal boxes were placed outside churches to collect special offerings connected to the Feast of Saint Stephen. A reference to Boxing Day’s origins appears in the Christmas Carol, “Good King Wenceslas.” Wenceslas, who was Duke of Bohemia in the early 10th century, saw a poor man gathering wood…

Every Christmas Eve, Icelandic people practice something called ‘jolabokaflod,’ which translates to ‘Christmas book flood. ‘ Jolabokaflod’ is pronounced Jola-boka-flod (with the ‘J’ sounding like the ‘Y’ in ‘yoghurt!)  The tradition  involves giving books as presents on Christmas Eve, so that friends and family can spend a cozy night in curled up with a good story. Let’s set the scene. It’s Christmas Eve and after receiving a brand-new book from your family, you sit comfortably in your favourite chair close to a warm fire with chocolates to eat and a mug of hot cocoa to spend the rest of the…

Winter Solstice

December 21, 2022 Lynne Northing

In the northern latitudes, midwinter’s day has been an important time for celebration throughout the ages. The Winter Solstice occurs exactly when the Earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the sun. On this shortest day of the year, and longest night, the sun is at its lowest and weakest; a pivotal turning point of the year from which the light will grow stronger and brighter. The Romans called it Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. The seasonal significance of the Winter Solstice is in the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of…

The First Christmas Card

The First Christmas Card

December 7, 2022 Lynne Northing

Have you written all your Christmas cards yet? No, neither have I. We all will be soon though won’t we, but why? Where and how did this tradition begin? The first Christmas card designed for sale was by London artist John Calcott Horsley and commissioned by Sir Henry Cole, a wealthy British businessman of the 1800’s, who found himself too busy in the festive season to send individual messages to all his friends. Yes, I know the feeling. Being a man who liked to be prepared therefore, in the summer of 1843 Sir Henry commissioned Horsley to design an impressive…

Christmas origins…

Christmas origins…

November 30, 2022 Lynne Northing

So, it is almost Christmas again, and time for the mad panic that it always causes as we rush around for cards and presents. That means it’s also time for my first Christmas blog, all about the origins of the special day. The word ‘Christmas’ comes from the Old English term ‘Cristes Mæsse’, meaning the ‘Mass of Christ’. The story of Christmas, as we all know, begins with the birth of a baby in Bethlehem. Many believe that Christ was born on the 25th, although the exact month is unknown. December could well have been chosen so the Catholic Church…

The Origins of Thanksgiving

The Origins of Thanksgiving

November 23, 2022 Lynne Northing

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on varied dates of the year in the United States and Canada celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe their Thanksgiving is modelled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. The Pilgrims travelled from Europe to the New World, a continent they had never known before, in hopes of creating a community free to worship God away from the strict rules of their old government. For many hard months they journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean enduring vicious storms,…

Add to that a line-up of mistresses looking for their lover-slash-Grace’s cheating-ass husband, a wedding reception, a mother with a fondness for smoking herbal cigarettes, and the task seems almost impossible. Luckily, she can count on Nat and Debs, her two best friends, to help out. But even with creative thinking and seizing opportunities when they present themselves, can Grace get away with murder? 10 Things you may want to know about Ghosts By P.J. Roscoe Okay, I know ‘Halloween’ has passed when everyone goes spook mad, but we thought you’d like a snippet of information regardless…? There are different types of ‘ghost’. A ‘Ghost’ or ‘residual haunting’ is a replay, a moving photo that has no consciousness. It does not know you are there, hence sometimes, they will move right through you if you’re in their path. A spirit is you and me; we have consciousness, feelings, thoughts and actions and will act accordingly. These spirits are interacting with you and me when…

A light-hearted history of Bonfire Night

A light-hearted history of Bonfire Night

November 2, 2022 Lynne Northing

Bonfire Night will soon be with us all again. Would you like to know the origins of this eventful night? The historic origins of Bonfire Night date to the conflict between virtually outlawed Catholics and the Protestant establishment of the 16th and early 17th century. On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes (the real one, not the stuffed variety) and a group of Catholic conspirators who felt badly treated by the King put 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar underneath the Houses of Parliament. (Not a bad idea, do I hear you say?) Some of those involved in the plot…

The Origins of Halloween

The Origins of Halloween

October 26, 2022 Lynne Northing

It will soon be Halloween everyone, one of the most important dates in witches calendars.             Though we celebrate Halloween on 31st October each year, do you know why?             Well, here is a brief explanation!             Halloween seems to have its roots in the Celtic celebration of Samhain, the last day of the Celtic calendar. Samhain was a Pagan harvest festival celebrated by huge sacred bonfires in honour of the dead, marking the end of the Celtic year and the beginning of a new one. Fire often symbolised the power of the sun, or served as a defence against…

TEN THINGS DOGS DON’T UNDERSTAND

TEN THINGS DOGS DON’T UNDERSTAND

October 19, 2022 Lynne Northing

It’s not big and it’s not clever to practice your barking at 4am. If Master glances at his watch and stands up, it doesn’t have to mean walkies. Every tin does not contain dog food. The cat is allowed in the house too. Wet, muddy dogs are not allowed on the furniture. It isn’t polite to leave your dinner so that you’re not too full to beg what you can from Master’s dinner first. Barking at people as an afterthought when they’ve been in the house for half an hour is very stupid. Just because someone is eating doesn’t mean…

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

Truth behind the Nursery Rhymes we grew up with.

October 12, 2022 Lynne Northing

“Goosey, Goosey Gander” is a traditional English nursery rhyme from the late 18th century. The more I read of nursery rhymes, the more cruel they seem to become! Although there is no exact evidence of this, it is believed that the origins of Goosey, Goosey Gander date back earlier to the 16th century, during King Henry VII’s reign, and it was used as propaganda of the Protestants against the Catholic Church. The title and first line of the song might also refer to the march of Cromwell’s soldiers in “goose-step”, in the mid 17th century, after the Civil War. The…

The thing on the perch is not a feathered kebab. The entire world does not revolve around you. Hearing purring doesn’t deaden your slave’s pain as your claws dig into their leg. Mangled, gory, quivering presents are not really appropriate. The purpose of having 9 lives is not to see how quickly you can use them up. Staring at the swimmy thing will not make it leap out of the tank. If you lose your bell, you’ll just be fitted with another. Killing shouldn’t really be at the top of your ‘Fun Things to do’ list. There are not enough…
